What's New for 2024?
The new model year sees the Mercedes-Benz GLS receiving a style refresh. This update gives the SUV an updated grille, a reworked front bumper, new LED taillights, a new steering wheel, and new color options. The base GLS 450 and mid-tier GLS 580 even get a boost to their powertrains and now output 375 horsepower and 510 horsepower, respectively. The GLS 580 also features a new Off-Road Engineering package, which adds underbody protection and a revised air suspension, which raises the SUV an additional 1.2 inches for enhanced ground clearance.
Trims
Three trims are available for the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
- GLS 450
- GLS 580
- AMG GLS 63
Performance
Two engine options are available for the new Mercedes-Benz GLS. The base model utilizes a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, producing 375 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The mid-tier trim is powered by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that outputs 510 hp and 538 lb.-ft. Meanwhile, the highest trim is equipped with a more powerful V-8 engine to generate 603 horsepower and 627 pounds of torque.
Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the Mercedes-Benz GLS base engine offers an estimated fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the V-8 engine drops those numbers to 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Interior Design
The new generation Mercedes-Benz GLS is more modern than previous models. Its seating arrangement can seat up to seven passengers, though it can be modified for six with the optional captain's chairs. Passenger space is generous in the first and second rows, and the third row, while not as accommodating, is spacious enough for most adults. Even the dashboard and cockpit designs are contemporary as they're borrowed from the new GLE-class SUV.
Technology
Sitting in the middle of the dash are two large 12.3-inch digital displays. The top monitor allows drivers to run Mercedes-Benz's MBUX software, which features an iPhone-like virtual assistant. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, in-dash navigation, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot are also available. The bottom screen, on the other hand, serves as a reconfigurable gauge display. Additionally, all GLS models come with a 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound stereo - this can be upgraded to an optional Burmester 3D audio system with an impressive 26-speaker arrangement.
Safety Features
Driving around the Clinton area or down the highway near Brandon, MS, is a safe experience in the Mercedes-Benz GLS, thanks to its suite of advanced driver aids. Standard safety features include forward collision mitigation, blind-spot intervention, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assistance, and a surround-view camera system.
